Well done to the Sars girls who progressed to the county final after overcoming a stiff test from Tracton on Saturday evening in Blackrock. Sars got off to a good start when Orla Barry goaled after seven minutes. Tracton responded with a pointed free. Sustained Sars pressure resulted in a 45 which Emer O’Farrell pointed. Back came Tracton with a goal and a point from open play. Emer O’Farrell levelled it on the stroke of half time with an expertly taken free.
Tracton came out after half time with all guns blazing and raced into a two point lead. Credit to the Sars girls who kept working hard and their endeavours were rewarded when Emer O’Farrell sent a 21 yard free to the net. Rita Crowley extended the Sars lead with a well taken point.
Back came Tracton with two points to leave the minimum between the sides. Aisling Whooley who was Sars best forward on the evening was fouled in the small parallelogram. Emer O’Farrell was desperately unlucky with the resulting penalty, the ball striking the crossbar and post before going wide. Shirley Crowley who was now making good progress on the flank for Sars added a point with less than two minutes remaining. The Sars faithful had to endure a tense few minutes as Tracton attacked.
When Margaret Lynch was fouled when coming out of defence with the sliothar, Sars were able to lift the siege and the game was won on a final score of 2-6 to 1-7. Edel Murphy was the star performer for the Sars girls, and was ably assisted by Orla Butler, Emer O’Connell, Catriona Barry and Aisling Whooley. Sars now have a week to prepare for the county final against Clonakilty which will take place at the Cork Camogie Grounds, Castle Road, Blackrock.
